What's in it for me?
NOTHING! Nothing, that is, unless you enjoy meeting people who think in the strange way that you do. Nothing, that is, unless you enjoy meeting people with the same perverse sense of humor that you have. Nothing, that is, unless you enjoy meeting people who have the same unquenchable curiosity that you have. Nothing, that is, unless you enjoy meeting people with the same intellectual capacity that you have. Nothing, that is, unless you enjoy a non-threatening, give-and-take atmosphere with other open-minded people.
Mensa is primarily a social organization, as such it is a place to meet people from every social stratum, every economic stratum, every occupation, every cultural, ethnic, religious, national extraction and, without probing, know that you can relate on an equal intellectual level. And Mensa offers many opportunities to meet stimulating people. Among the approximately 350 members in the Miami area, the additional 500 or so members between Broward and Palm Beach counties, the some 45,000 members in the United States and the 50,000 members spread throughout the rest of the world you are bound to find a plethora of individuals who share your interests, and as a member you have access to everyone of them. With so many members with such varying backgrounds and interests Mensa offers numerous avenues for communication.
Mensa offers many local activities, frequent regional gatherings, an annual American Mensa gathering, numerous other national gatherings, and an international gathering. All great venues to meet. For those too shy to meet in person there are more than 200 Special Interest Groups with which you can correspond. As with any organization you gain from Mensa what you are willing to invest in it.
Want examples? There have been thousands of Mensa marriages. Mensans that travel for business or pleasure can meet local Mensans for dinner and conversation in any city they visit - much better than sitting in a hotel room eating room-service food and watching television. Recently a Mensan who moved here from a South American country had a misunderstanding with those she was living with. An e-mail to Miami Mensa brought her immediate friends, social and business contacts, and a sense of belonging. Does Mensa have a lot to offer? You better believe it.
